FEC Rangers

HISTORY OF THE RANGER DIVISION

The Park Ranger program began in the late 1960’s as a public relations and interpretative tool. Rangers spent 90 percent of their time patrolling the parks and seeking voluntary compliance with park rules. Over the years, the incidence of non-compliance increased. As a result, in 1982, the District organized the Park Ranger Division and gave the Rangers authority to issue citations under the California Public Resources Code, Section 5782.26. The Rangers were Public Officers and could issue citations for misdemeanor and infraction violations of state, city, county, or district laws, regulations, or ordinances. Since 1982, the program has increasingly focused on law enforcement issues. In July of 1999, the Board of Directors granted Peace Officer Status in accordance with the Public Resources Code, Section 5782.26 and Penal Code, Section 830.31.
